It started with an octopus...

The story starts far, far away from here, in San Francisco to be precise. While on a geek trip, Olivier Martineau went into a baker’s shop, where this simple idea came to him: he would enable online merchants to know their customers as well as the neighborhood baker knows his.

Once he returned to France, the idea stared to mature. Olivier then met Virginie Ducreux and Isa Sey. The good idea came alive and, in May 2011, a new online service was launched under the Spreadbutton name, offering a rather clever concept: a share button to install on e-commerce websites, allowing users to get discounts each time they shared on social networks.

On August 10th, 2011, everything changed! Mildred from Facebook in Palo Alto sent us an e-mail: our concept was “amazing, but…” we were no longer allowed to offer discounts for sharing content on Facebook, and Facebook was giving us 48 hours to change our ways… What a cruel dilemma. What could we do? Give up altogether? Head for the hills and farm sheep in Patagonia? Out of the question! We racked our brains, listened to our customers, and focused on what really concerned them to identify what they really needed: knowledge.

Over the course of several months, the solution evolved, with the invaluable help of pioneer customers such as Kusmi Tea. The solution progressively integrated marketing, CRM, segmentation, and scenarios, marking an end for the buttons and our growing pains. Instead, SPREAD joined the daily grind of dealing with the overriding issues for marketing today with a complete solution, far removed from the little button that it started out as.

After two funding rounds and a change of name, we are a team of 24 octopuses (so, 192 tentacles between us) who now work hard daily to satisfy our over 400 customers. As for the next chapter in the story… we were hoping you’d write it with us!
